Give that pup an extra snuggle tonight...

This is taken from Dr. Michael Fox's veterinary column...

I'm writing in response to your recent column about how a "dog's devotion to master can lead to the grave." It is similar to what occurred with our golden retriever more than 20 years ago when my husband died at 46 after a four-year battle with cancer. During my husband's illness, Friday laid beside his bed, provided support when my husband walked, and never left his side. He obviously knew something was wrong and was devoted to his master. Before my husband was ill, he was a senior sports-and-news cameraman for a major TV station. Owing to the nature of his assignments, my husband's work hours were unpredictable. Regardless of the hour, Friday always knew when my husband was headed home and ran to the front door, wagging his tail and sitting patiently until my husband's car pulled into the driveway. After my husband's death (in the hospital), Friday sat at the front door all day, every day, whining and waiting for my husband's return. He stopped eating and wouldn't leave the front hallway. He refused to play with our children whom he loved because "guard duty" was his only purpose. He left his post only when he needed to be waked. My heart was breaking for this dog. After one week of watching Friday's vigil, I decided to help him understand what happened. Hesitantly, Friday left his post and got into the car with me. His car behavior was unusual: He paced from window to window, looking everywhere for my husband. I drove to the cemetery, and we walked together toward my husband's gravesite. As we got closer, Friday pulled away from me and ran directly to my husband's grave. He lay down on the grave, closed his eyes, and just stayed there, quietly. I didn't try to talk to Friday or to disturb him -- he needed to grieve, too. After an hour, Friday got up and walked over to me, using his mouth to hand me his leash. He was ready to go home. On the way back home, Friday laid down quietly in the backseat. After we arrived home, he kept kissing my hands as if to say "thank you" and never again sat by the front door waiting for my husband to return home. He now understood. Although obviously sad, his behavior returned to normal around the children and he began eating again. In time, he healed as we did.

Many readers will join me in thanking you for this remarkable example of giving a dog closure with regard to your husband whom Friday thought was perhaps still alive. Your devoted dog clearly advances our understanding of how much some dogs really do know and feel. We should never underestimate their ability to comprehend and make every effort, as you did, during such difficult times of bereavement to help them when they are grieving.

How old is your pup?

We've all heard about 1 dog year equalling 7 people years, but that's not exactly true... Do you know that it can be different for different breeds and sizes? Have you also wondered when your dog goes from being a puppy to an adult to a senior? Thankfully, Pedigree has a Dog Age Calculator on their website. Just select your dog's breed and size and they will do all of the calculations for you. You may be surprised at what you find out!

Naps? We don't need no stinking naps!

Is it nap time at All Wags? Indie doesn't think so! She is primed and ready to play and her friends are snoozing and soaking up the sun. How cute is she rolling around, just begging for them to get up and join her in her frolics? Lucky for Indie there are so many friends at All Wags that even if she can't convince these friends to get up and play with that ball with her, there are plenty of other friends to hang out with. All Wags is such a great place for a dog to be a dog!

Do you Yelp?

Have you checked out Yelp? Yelp is a great search tool to find out all about local businesses... And, guess what? A review about All Wags was featured in their weekly newsletter. We are so honored and feel so lucky to hear what you guys have to say about us! Thanks, Dan! We really appreciate it! We always knew that we had the best customers in town and this just solidifies it!

Puppy, it's cold outside!

It's been so cold and it's getting cold again, come on spring! Some of our pups are cold-weather dogs and thrive in this weather and are made for it, happy huskies! Others have been very stylish of recent, sporting their coats and sweaters to All Wags. We love seeing our All Wags pups having their fashion show and looking so adorable while doing it! Check out Macy Lou and Jack soaking up some very deceiving-looking sun (because though it was beautiful outside, it was cold) in their fabulous matching coats.

A very special poem about dog's written by Bill's nephew, Ben

Ben turns 15 years old this weekend.  He recently moved from Virginia and now lives with his aunt and uncle ("Uncle Bob" aka Bill) in Charlotte.  His a Freshman at Myers Park High School.  He loves animals including his two cats and two dogs in Virginia and, of course, Bourbon (his tiny cat) and Baxter (his huge yellow lab) here in Charlotte. He is the foremost, world's expert on Johnny Cash, and sounds just like him on the guitar. In fact, he taught himself to play and is a very gifted musician with a remarkable "ear." Aside from his love of music and his extra sharp hearing, he likes being outdoors and loves being at All Wags (even when he is helping out with the hard work). He has had a pretty tough year, but it is getting better quickly. Being at All Wags has really helped get him through it all. His dog, Baxter, and All Wags are the inspiration for this poem, which is now also helping him pass his English class, Hurray!

Mans Best Friend

Man’s best friend should never be alone

Or you could leave him with a bone

For he is one who never wants to be lone

He will always be my own

And in my mind I think about him all day

My mind is always heading the right way

The problem with him today

Is that he’s not feeling as gay

So how to cheer my friend who is yellow

I vow to send him to a place that is mellow

Where he can be as gay as a fellow

And maybe get some Jell-o!

Finally I reveal who is my friend

And you thought he might be pretend

But the truth will help you comprehend

He’s man’s best friend

Snow won't keep us away!!!

The weather this week has been pretty unbelievable, huh!? You can rest assured knowing that no matter what, All Wags will be open! No amount of snow or ice will close our doors! We know that many of you still need to make your way to work even if schools or other businesses are closed and know that you still need a reliable place to take your pup while you do that. Plus, these snow filled days are just fun for the pups, as you can see from the photo. Also, please know that we have many heaters and indoor areas available for the dogs who may not enjoy the snow as much as these pups! We're ready to take care of your furry kids no matter what Mother Nature throws our way!

Adoptable Pets from Animal Care and Control

These guys didn't make it into our newsletter in time, but they very much need good homes. Is your new year's resolution to have more love in your life? I bet these guys would be happy to help you out with that. If you are interested in meeting either Grayson or Paisley, contact Animal Care and Control.

Meet Grayson... Paws Up he is a fantastic little fellow. His fur is a wonderful grey color and soft like velvet to touch. He is a really cool little dude. He has Cherry Eye in one of his eyes... and I think people over look him because of it...this is easily corrected! Grayson loves to go outside with his people and do the dog thing...sniff...play...run...and explore! He is small at only 17 lbs and still a very young boy with many years of love to give.  He loves to be inside hanging out with his family and getting some love time. He is perfect for inside home or apartment.  He is very very affectionate and loves to, give kisses and snuggle.  Grayson is active and very excited to get out of kennel but once he has relived some energy he calms down. He loves to learn new things... We are working on his leash walking, but because he is small even if he pulls he is easy to handle. He is eager to please and likes to get treats and that makes training easy. He comes when called which is fantastic.  We visit the farm animals at the shelter and he seems to really enjoy that. He likes to go up to the fence and sniff and say hello.  Please come to interact with him and help him to put his best paw forward with his new family.

Help out pups in need

Do you want to help out pups in need and the people who love them? We are having a food drive this month for the pet food bank at Animal Care and Control. The pet food bank helps people get to keep their pets. Often with a bad economy, extras like dog food can be the first to have to go out of a family's monthly budget. We will be collecting all sorts of dog food; dry food, wet food, treats, etc. There is a box in the lobby. Please donate what you can and just bring them when you come to All Wags!

January Issue of the All Wags Newsletter

The January issue of the All Wags newsletter has been posted to the website, and you should have received  it to your email also. If you didn't receive it to your email, will you let us know? That means we don't have your email address and we certainly don't want you to miss out any emails from All Wags. We have two dog families of the month, 4 very special pups in total. There are also a lot of adoptable dogs this month, one who has been living at All Wags for quite a few months now waiting for his forever home and he is ready for love! Don't miss this month's coupon, $15 baths to get those pups cleaned. Happy New Year! Go 2011!
