Today is a fabulous day, do you know why? Today is my mama Karen's birthday! Did you wish her a happy birthday today? She's a very special lady who takes care of all of us pups and treats each and every pup like her own and loves us all like her own. And... I should know because I am her own! She's also very caring and loving to all of the All Wags employees and customers and is one of the kindest people there is! She deserves all great things that come her way for being so amazing! Happy, happy birthday!!!

Hey Guys! We sure do miss you! Left Charlotte in January, 2011 for a 7 month Interim in Hampton, VA. LOVED it. Moved to Winchester, VA in September - now pastor of Trinity Lutheran in Stephens City, VA! Love it here, too (although it is considerably CHILLER!!!) New Year is a Time for Reflection

As we approach the new year, it's time to start thinking about how great 2011 was. We are so thankful to have the best customers and pups in Charlotte. The All Wags family is constantly growing and getting better and better. We are so thankful for all of the happy and healthy babies who joined the All Wags family this year too, both people babies and new puppies. We've had many opportunities to help pups find forever homes and that just makes everyone smile and we also had the great new opportunity to have the All Wags Express. 2011 has been a great year, we can't wait to see what 2012 has in store for us! We'd say Spencer here is pretty thankful for All Wags too, especially his holiday toy!

Tips for the Holiday Party Season

Since, it's the holiday season, I'm sure that most of you will be having more guests that usual. Our pups don't always like visitors as much as we do, so read on for some tips from Dogster.com...

If you're having visitors during the holidays, you want to get everything in place for the arrival of family members. Many dogs become excitable around guests, and the controlled chaos of large family events can be enough to arouse the senses of the most docile of pooches.

To prepare for the bustle of a hosted event, make your that your dog gets plenty of exercise prior to guests' arrival. Take a half-hour before the first knock at the door to play fetch, take a walk, or otherwise enjoy your pup's favorite game. This will help get that extra bit of energy out and make him less excitable. You may also want to let your dog take a breather in a quiet area of the house as guests are arriving and then introduce him to the crowd after the initial commotion has subsided.

Daniel the Miracle Dog

Have you heard about Daniel the Miracle Dog? Daniel was abandoned at a kill-shelter in Alabama and miraculously survived the gas chamber. When he survived the people at the shelter didn't have the heart to put him back in, so he got to live! He and his new owner were on the Anderson Cooper show today, you can see the video here. His story is truly a miracle and now he has a fabulous new life and is even going to be a spokesperson for adopting shelter dogs

Training classes at All Wags

Remember there are 2 great training classes that are starting this weekend at All Wags!

Puppy Class - 3 months to 6 months starting Saturday, December 3rd at 9:00 a.m. 6 weeks of class, 1 hour each week for $139.00.

Basic Obedience Class - any age - Saturday, December 3rd at 10:00 a.m. 6 weeks of class, 1 hour each week for only $139.00

Thanksgiving Leftovers for Your Pup

Do you have so many Thanksgiving leftovers that you just don't know what to do with them? Well, how about whipping up a special meal for your pup using some of those leftovers. Trust me, they will love you for it!

Ingredients
3 lb/1.3 kg skinless turkey pieces (light and dark meat)
1 cup (about 6 oz/175 g) oatmeal (cooked)
1 lb/450 g sweet potatoes, cubed
2 tbsp cranberry sauce
4 tbsp turkey gravy (optional; to reduce the fat content, omit the gravy or substitute olive oil)

Directions
Use turkey leftovers or roast the turkey:
1. Preheat oven to 350°F/180°C. Lightly oil a roasting pan.
2. For boneless breast or thigh, cook 30–45 minutes; boned breast or thigh, 45–60 minutes; whole turkey, 1 1/2–2 hours or until the meat juices run clear when pierced with a skewer. Let cool.
3. Remove all the bones and dice the meat into large pieces.
4. If using fresh sweet potatoes, roast with the turkey for about 25–30 minutes or until tender. Let cool, then peel and dice.
5. Meanwhile, cook the oatmeal according to package instructions.
6. Mix together the turkey meat, oatmeal, sweet potatoes, and cranberry sauce. If using gravy or oil, add it now and mix thoroughly. (If your dog is at all prone to pancreatitis or other fat-related upsets, omit the gravy.)

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! Just a reminder All Wags is closed for daycare tomorrow (Thanksgiving day) and there will be no pick-ups or drop-offs for the boarded dogs. We'll be there celebrating Thanksgiving with the boarded pups. We will be back to regular hours on Friday 6am-7pm for daycare, drop-offs and pick-ups. We hope that you all have a great Thanksgiving with your families and if you are traveling and your pup is staying with us, we will give them lots of love and snuggles!

Take a Peak Inside the Mutt Hutt

Have you ever wondered what the Mutt Hutt looks like? Your pups have stayed overnight in our spacious accommodations but it's pretty hard to actually take a peak inside when we give a tour without walking through Big Paws. So, here is a photo for you to take a peak at instead. Each kennel has a bed and your pup gets their own water dish. They eat in these kennels when they board too. These kennels are fully enclosed and we store their belongings on top so that their items stay close. We've had a couple of people ask so we wanted to be able to let you all know. If you ever have any other questions about our facilities or procedures, just let us know!

Today is Katie and Martha's Forever Home Celebration!

Katie and Martha are two pups who come to All Wags and their dad, Jim, sent us their story in honor of today being their Forever Home Celebration Day! Read on for the sweet story about how these two puppy girls became the best of friends!

I found Katie at Animal Care & Control Center back in 2006, six months after I had to put my 16 year old Lab/Border Collie to sleep. Katie was listed as a Lab mix. There is no Lab in her! I didn't even think about it until I got her home, but she has some Pit bull in her. I do not even consider her a pit bull. Josh commented one afternoon when I picked her up from All Wags that Katie was one of the most mellow & laid back dogs that he has known. Katie came home with me on the second week of November and has been very happy since that day
On the other hand, Martha was listed as a Lab/Rotweiler mix that I brought home as a 6 week puppy back on the second week of November last year. Katie accepted her a week later and now they are best friends. I hate to admit it but Martha was almost too much for me to deal with. Thank God for All Wags! She was an instant hit the first day that she came to play there! Either the 2nd or 3rd day that I took her there, she ran inside so fast that I had to drop the leash for fear of her getting hurt. She ran around the attendant waiting to take the leash and by the time Katie & I walked through the front door, Martha was behind the counter & giving licks to everyone back there. I proceeded to let Katie's leash go and she went back to where she plays with her freinds without assistance.
They both love it when they go to All Wags and the best part is that they are asleep in less that 1/2 hour when they get home! Thank you All Wags

Josh has a new baby girl and Karen has a new grand baby, oh happy day! Kinsley arrived at 11:54am on Tuesday, October 25th! She was over due by a couple of days and was a very stubborn girl making her journey out, but everyone is so happy that she is here! She was 8 lbs. 11oz and 19 in. long. They were at Presbyterian Hospital in Matthews and went home this morning. Kaiah has been staying with her Paw Paw and Grammie (Karen and Robin) this week and Grammie Karen has been so happy to have her around and is so happy to have so many adorable grand babies to love. The family just keeps growing and growing and each new baby brings so much more joy!

Reba has a forever home and a happy ending!

I'm sure that you all know Reba, the sweet bloodhound who has been waiting at All Wags for her forever home, a much-deserved forever home... Well, this past weekend, Reba got the happy ending that she so deserved! Do you all know her story? Read on, it's a pretty amazing success story!

Reba was brought to All Wags from Donna Norcross with Lucky Labs Rescue. Donna was in Stanly County and Reba was brought into Animal Control. She was so sick and malnourished that they were just going to put her to sleep. Well, Donna knew about how much Karen loves Bloodhounds, so she called her up and you all know what happened next, Reba came to All Wags. The poor thing was skin and bones and was about 30 lbs underweight. We immediately took her to Pressly Animal Hospital and Dr. Pressly told us we had a lot of work ahead of us and he couldn’t really tell us if she would survive. She tested positive for heartworms, was underweight, had an ear infection, and had probably already had 3 liters of puppies even though she was only about 1 ½ years old. He said the people who had her had probably just bred her from the first time she had gone in heat, gotten money from the puppies, and now didn’t need her anymore so they just put her out. Dr. Pressly immediately spayed her, started her heartworm treatments, got her started on ear medication and we brought her back to All Wags to recover. We fed her rotisserie chicken for weeks just to get weight on her. We had to clean her ears 3 times a day and just keep her quiet to let the heartworm treatment work. Every single employee at All Wags took her under their wing and between us all we nursed her back to health. She was cleared from Dr. Pressly and now we needed to get her adopted but the problem was we were all so much in love with her (Karen especially) that we never even put a sign up that she was available.

This past weekend Jake Gerhard, one of our pups that was with us from the old building and moved to Virginia, came to board with us. Anytime Jake’s parents travel they drive him to All Wags to stay with his old friends. Well, when Niki, Jake's mom walked in she saw Reba up front and wanted to know who she belonged to. Reba came out and worked her magic with Niki and after about 1 minute she was in love. Niki left and talked to her husband Chris and they called me Friday night saying that they wanted to adopt Reba. On Sunday morning we packed up her belongings , including a new collar, leash and bed, and off she went with her new family. We have gotten reports every day and Reba is one very lucky girl. She is being treated like the princess she is and deserves to be. She is sleeping on the sofa, going on long walks, has a fenced in back yard and now she has a new puppy brother and a new human brother Brooks who is 3 years old. Reba is being really good with Brooks and lets him climb all over her. Her and Jake are becoming best friends and sleep together every night on Reba’s bed. She has a true family that she is now a part of!

Hey! It's Mandy and Ella and guess what we got last week? A little baby sister! Maura Lynn was born on October 18th at 7:48pm, weighing 7 lbs. 1 oz. and is 19 3/4 in. long. We had been noticing that our mama's belly was getting really big and knew something was up and then it was so weird because our people parents left together really early in the morning and didn't take us with them. We ended up then being picked up and taken to All Wags and were even more confused. When dad came to get us and we got home, there was mama with a much smaller belly and a baby in our arms. We were very curious and wanted to sniff the baby and once we got a chance to smell her we could tell that she was part of our family and we love her so much. We get very concerned when our baby cries and want to know where she is at all times and are just so happy to have another family member!

WHY:

Celebrate the "Grand RE-OPENING" of the clinic's newly remodeled Toomey Avenue location which is a low-cost, high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter clinic. The clinic staff is offering clinic tours of the

newly updated facility to the media, volunteers and the public from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm on Saturday along with the opportunity to learn more about upcoming low-cost vaccine clinics, events and more.

We are so proud to be the 98th and 99th clinics to be set-up under the Humane Alliance model. Across the United States the Humane Alliance model has created targeted, high-volume, low-cost spay/neuter programs that save lives.

Our renovations, which included cabinetry, new floors and ceilings, enclosing outside kennels and adding climate control and new medical equipment were made possible by a grant from PetSmart Charities. We are hopeful that by making the proposed changes outlined by the Humane Alliance, we are estimating that we will perform over 18,000 spay/neuter surgeries at our two clinics in 2012.

Amazing True and Touching Story!

This was verified on snopes.com, so as you read and tears well up in your eyes, you can know that you're getting teary-eyed at a true story... So sweet!

Our 14-year-old dog Abbey died last month. The day after she passed away my 4-year-old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would recognize her. I told her that I thought we could so, and she dictated these words:
Dear God,
Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick.
I hope you will play with her. She likes to swim and play with balls. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her you will know that she is my dog. I really miss her.
Love, Meredith
We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey and Meredith and addressed it to God/Heaven. We put our return address on it. Then Meredith pasted several stamps on the front of the envelope because she said it would take lots of stamps to get the letter all the way to heaven. That afternoon she dropped it into the letter box at the post office. A few days later, she asked if God had gotten the letter yet. I told her that I thought He had.
Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front porch addressed, 'To Meredith' in an unfamiliar hand. Meredith opened it. Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers called, 'When a Pet Dies.' Taped to the inside front cover was the letter we had written to God in its opened envelope. On the opposite page was the picture of Abbey & Meredith and this note:
Dear Meredith,
Abbey arrived safely in heaven. Having the picture was a big help and I recognized her right away.
Abbey isn't sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don't need our bodies in heaven, I don't have any pockets to keep your picture in so I am sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by.
Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and sending it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you. I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much. By the way, I'm easy to find. I am wherever there is love.

The mother said that she considered asking at the post office about the package but thought she liked it better just not knowing exactly how the package got to them...

Mrs. Mosby is a Big Sister!!

There is another baby in the All Wags family and we are so excited! Mrs. Mosby became a big puppy sister to Paxton Chase on August 16th. She is loving being a big sister and having the baby around the house. And, so are her mom and dad! Paxton was 7 lbs. 10 oz. when he was born and is continuing to grow into a big boy. Just imagine all of the fun that Paxton and Mrs. Mosby will get to have together as they grow up with each other! Do you have an exciting announcement in your family? Did you know that second hand smoke is bad for your pup too?

The ASPCA posted this interesting information today to their website... another great reason to quit smoking!

It seems like a no-brainer: Smoking around your pet is bad news. But just how dangerous is it? Truth be told, it can be downright deadly.
A study conducted by the Tufts College of Veterinary Medicine shows that cats living in homes with smokers have a greater chance of being diagnosed with mouth cancer. Because of their grooming habits, cats continually lick and ingest cancer-causing carcinogens that build up on their fur. They are also twice as likely to develop malignant lymphoma—a cancer that occurs in the lymph nodes and is often fatal.
What about dogs? Well, research shows that dogs living in a smoking household are at a much greater risk of developing cancers of the nose and sinus area. Dogs with nasal cancer typically survive less than one year.
Make a Change : The best thing for a pet parent to do is designate an area outside the home to smoke…or better yet, give up the habit. Smoking is bad for you, too.

Today the Humane Society of Charlotte is hosting a Canine Communication Seminar from 1-2:30pm at their training center at 2700 Toomey Ave. in Charlotte. Robin Brown, the Humane Society's Animal Behavior Manager, will be presenting the seminar where you will learn how to talk to your dog, why dominance is not a good idea and the difference between disobedience and miscommunication. Your friends come over for a party and leave their purses on the floor. Your dog discovers two tasty things inside them: lipstick and chewing gum with xylitol (a low cal sweetener). Lipstick is non-toxic, but xylitol is very dangerous to dogs and dogs are very much attracted to it. For parties, invite your friends to put their purses in a designated closet or bedroom and then shut the door. Moochers thwarted! Lipstick saved! Moochers also saved!

Cut Your Shelter Dog Some Slack

Great advice for anyone who has recently rescued a shelter pup! Reprinted from Dogster.com's daily dog tip.

You see her in the shelter, all big, soulful eyes, eager tail, floppy ears and gentle submission. But just get her home and she's the devil in disguise. Remember: you have to cut your new rescued pup some slack. Behind every shelter dog is a story of loss, struggle and survival. Which is exactly why you are rescuing her! You are her knight in shining armor. Just remember, it may be a few months before she can believe that she's in her forever home. Until then, you've got to give her time to settle in.

Sweet Reba who needs a forever home!

I'm sure that you have noticed sweet little Reba who has been hanging out in the office at All Wags... Well, this puppy girl needs a forever home and a second chance at a fabulous life! She was found in Stanley County walking down the road. It is suspected that she was adopted out but to the wrong people who chose to breed her and deprive her of food and veterinary care. She is approximately 1 1/2 to 2 years old and about 30 pounds underweight, but we are working on that weight gain. Dr. Pressly of Pressly Animal Hospital in Indian Trail spayed her for us and did it at the same rate that he gives to rescue groups. Thank you Dr. Pressly! She is also currently being treated for heartworm but that should be cleared up soon. She has been getting her treatments which were explained to us as the same pain as if someone were hitting you on the small of your back for 10 minutes with a baseball bat but it saved her life. This sweet girl has been through a lot and has fought through it all. She deserves a loving home with a loving family! Are you the family for her? Please pass this on!

Fabulous news! All Wags is opening a second location in Ballantyne. At this second location, pups can be dropped off and picked up and they will then be transported to our location on Griffith Rd. that you all know and love on the All Wags Express bus. Yes, you heard that right, an All Wags bus! Photos will be posted as soon as the bus is done being painted. The new location will also have a fabulous boutique for all of your shopping pleasure. So many awesome things are in the works, be sure to stay tuned as we make more and more announcements! A word of warning about weed killer

Read on for a true story from Scarlet and Kenan's mama, Ashley:

Scarlet was outside while Jeff was working in the yard, including spraying weed killer on many of those pesky weeds we all have! Jeff noticed her rolling (sliding her head and neck through the chemical, then turning on her back and wiggling) in the weeds he had just sprayed. He immediately told her NO and rinsed her off. Unfortunately, she then started licking the water that had rinsed from her body, again polluted with the weed killer chemical. That stuff must have tasted good because she did have a bowl of fresh water to drink from as well!! Anyway, Jeff put her inside and continued working in the yard. The next morning as I was leaving for work, I noticed Scarlet was shaking, almost as if having a seizure. I called the vet, rushed her there, where they kept her under observation for the rest of the day. She had a temperature of 104 and had two more seizure-like episodes or tremors. They recommended I take her to Carolina Veterinary Specialists for continued care of acute Diquat toxicity. Diquat dibromide is found in many yard products and pesticides (it is an herbicide and plant growth regulator). It can be fatal if large amounts are swallowed or absorbed through the skin. Luckily, Scarlet did not have toxic levels in her blood, but they think the systemic effects were present in her mostly because of her rolling in the grass/weeds where it had been sprayed and it being absorbed through her skin. They treated her with IV fluids to flush her system, and she had a catheter. She stayed at the emergency vet for 24 hours.

Just want to make everyone aware of what can happen! Scarlet is well now and has put on some weight :) Thanks!!

Check out sweet little Samson here... Now, that's tired! The cute little guy actually fell asleep with his nose in the fence. He had been having such a fun day of playing at All Wags and was so tired from all of that fun running around that he plopped down, stuck that nose in the fence and fell fast asleep. Pups can be comfortable and sleep anywhere and it's just SO cute!

Guess what we did today?

Bubbles! And... we had a blast! The simplest things can really be the most fun. We loved running and jumping and trying to catch the bubbles. Some of us pups just liked watching the bubbles float through the air and disappear. Can anyone help us figure out where they go? Bubbles and snowball, huh? They just disappear. The people at All Wags were having a blast blowing the bubbles and watching us chase. The bubble photos have been posted to our Facebook page, so be sure and check them out!

Pups and Fireworks

Summer can be as Tough as Winter on your Pup's Paws

Winter is finally gone and with it the threat of cracked or salt-burned paws. Unfortunately, summer brings with a new set of risks to your dog's feet. If you have a dog that has long hair in between the paw pads, it's a good idea to very carefully trim the fur there. This hair can be a magnet for all kinds of things, including burrs, foxtails, mud, thorns, sharp rocks or glass and debris. Examine your dog's feet immediately after a walk, and then clean them with a wet cloth. Much like salty sidewalks can burn your dog's feet in the winter, hot blacktop or asphalt in the summer can hurt your pet. During the summer, consider walking your dog very early in the morning or well after the sun sets. Before your walk, place your hand on the walking surface for a minute. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your pup's paws!

In case you hadn't noticed, it has been crazy hot recently! (Right, like you hadn't noticed, Ha!) That means that we have been having a lot of pool parties at All Wags, basically all day every day. The pups love playing in the water and even the ones who don't love water will even dip their toes into the water and get some relief from the heat. The water makes such a fun additional element to the pups' day at All Wags and we love watching them have such a great time and enjoy the water with them. That means for the people at All Wags throwing lots of wet tennis balls and getting lots of wet doggie hugs and kisses, but we wouldn't want it any other way! Summer is a fabulous time to be a dog!

Sam & Madison … A Canine Pair Looking for a Forever Home Together

Do you have room in your heart, family and home for two more sweet dogs? See below for a very sad story that we hope can have a very happy ending!

Last week at the Humane Society of Charlotte, Sam, a very sweet shepherd mix (10 years old) alumni that was adopted as a puppy at HSC, along with his sister, Maddie, an aussie-shepherd mix (4 years old), also an alumni from a California Humane Society, were returned to us. Here is their story and we h ope that a loving family will reach out to help these beautiful dogs.

Prior to Sam and Maddie returning to us, a volunteer noticed a reference to the Humane Society of Charlotte on Craig’s List; it was copy reaching out with the hopes of finding a safe and loving home for them so they could remain together. The volunteer contacted us and we immediately reached out to the adopter, who was trying desperately to re-home his two canine family members due to serious health problems that were resulting in relocating out of the country.

The emotional day came last week, when he surrendered his two friends. It was one of the most difficult things that an owner can do. Both dogs are healthy and up-to-date on their shots and are both housebroken. Sam is a big happy goofball, who loves the kennels and the excitement of the people; his sister. Maddie is a sweetheart but is very timid and just wants to find her new family.

If you are hoping to add two very special dogs to your family, please contact us about Sam and Maddie. We are making accommodations for them in the kennels so they can be together, but they need to have the comfort of a new home full of love and comfort.

Even with the struggle that their owner is going through, he still emails us daily to check on them and we would love to share the great news that they are in a safe and loving home where they belong … together.

Please help us make this happen this week …. They deserve a happy ending.

Lost and Found

Jena and Cullie definitely had a scary Memorial Day weekend with a happy ending. Jena and Cullie were out at the Whitewater Center enjoying a beautiful Sunday afternoon when Cullie slipped out of her collar and ran away. Jena then started a huge hunt for Cullie and she was missing for nearly 30 hours, very scary! Though, I'm sure that Cullie was having a blast playing in the woods, her mama was worried sick! Jena ended up camping out in her car at the Whitewater Center and when she got to the point where she just had to fall asleep she decided to put her shirt on the outside of her car. She woke up to Cullie scratching at the shirt, she had been attracted to her mama's scent! They were both so happy to be back together!

If you have both a dog and cat living in the same house then you need to be on the lookout for more than your pets chasing each other through the living room. The dietary needs of dogs and cats are much different and your pooch needs to be kept away from the feline food bowl. The strong aroma of cat food can be quite enticing to a grazing dog. Commercially prepared cat foods are very high in protein and fat when compared to dog foods. Besides the obvious effect of weight gain, the richness of cat food can have much more serious effects on a dog if fed regularly. Although the issue of high-protein canine diets is a hot topic and not as simple as is indicated on the nutritional analysis on the side of the pet food bag, you generally do not want your dog eating food that is formulated for cats.

Helping a Timid Puppy with Submissive Peeing

Here's a tip from Dogster.com:

Submissive peeing is a sign of apprehension, fear and excitement all in one. The first step for helping your puppy get over it is to ignore her when you first get home. After you have ignored your dog on your arrival, you can reach out to pat her by giving a scratch to her chest, but don't reach over her head to pat her head, since that is a threatening move to a dog who is already timid. Keep the greeting calm, with a quiet, low key voice.

A New Life for Ralph

I'm sure you all know of our pal Ralph who has been waiting at All Wags for his forever home. We helped to save Ralph from being put down at an animal shelter and have been waiting and hoping for a fabulous life for him. Well, sweet Ralph the bloodhound has a new forever home and, guess what, his new dad's name is Ralph too! It's like they were made for each other! In Ralph's new family he has a people brother and his new people brother is 17-years-old an in remission from cancer. He has to do an at-home school because of it and that can get pretty lonely. 5 Ways to Celebrate Mother's Day with your Pup

Here are some ideas on fun ways to celebrate Mother's Day together. With a little preparation it will be a day to wag about.

Go to brunch together! The weather is getting warmer, and that means more restaurants are setting up their patios and sidewalks for al fresco dining. If you live in an area where dogs are allowed to join their people at outdoor tables, sniff around for one that has an appealing menu and will welcome you with your dog. Keep in mind that it may be pretty busy at some of these places on Mother's Day, and call ahead to see if it would be OK to bring your dog. Reservations may be needed. Be open to celebrating on another day; the day before Mother's Day is just as good as the "big day" itself, and you won't have to deal with the crowds. (Prices for just about the same food may well be lower, too.)
Get your dog the right duds. Dress your dog up for the holiday with a leash or collar designed with hearts or flowers. It'll brighten your day every time you look at your fur child.
Help your dog send you a card. Dogs may not be very good at taking the car and going shopping, but if they were, you can be assured that yours would buy you a very cool Mother's Day card. The good news is that you can help your dog out with card "shopping" without ever leaving the house. And there are plenty of places to find great doggy Mother's Day cards online. Sloppy Kiss Cards has several very appealing animated Mother's Day cards you can custom design with pictures of your breed of choice, and a message from your dog. Go with your dog and sniff out a bunch of flowers that will brighten your week. (Try not to rely too much on your dog's suggestions, because dogs don't exactly have the best color vision.) Many farmer's markets have stands that prepare tasty local foods, so you can even grab yourselves a fun Mother's Day meal there. With the beautiful weather we have been having recently, it looks like spring/summer is officially here to stay! Here is a tip from Dogster.com about how to keep your lawn safe for your pets:

Many of us hire lawn care professionals to help bring an emerald green shade to our grass. But when that same lawn is used by your pooch for play, rest and a place to potty, then special care needs to be taken to make sure that any lawn sprays used are pet-safe.

Many commercial lawn sprays contain herbicides or pesticides which can be very dangerous. Common fertilizers can also cause allergic reactions in some dogs. As those first signs of spring abound, now may be the time to make the switch to organic fertilizers. Common organic fertilizers include bone meal, kelp, seaweed and ever-popular manure. Fortunately, many landscape companies are becoming more aware of the increasing consumer demand for pet- and people-safe lawns and they are utilizing safe grass treatments.

Were you one of the lucky ones who came out to see us at Bark in the Park? We hope so because that would make you very lucky. It was a beautiful day and Rural Hill is a gorgeous park! We had a blast handing out treats, talking about All Wags and meeting new friends. Did you and your pups enjoy all of the freebies, raffles and contests? Did anyone bring home a new friend from Bark in the Park? There were so many rescues there with so many adorable pups needing homes. We kind of wanted to take them all! Now, I am lucky enough to be staying at All Wags with all the nice people and other pups. I am a full-blooded bloodhound just like Rosie! The vet thinks I am about 1 year old and I am getting my shots and getting neutered. I'm a really nice guy and people love me, now I just need a forever home. Will you take me home with you? Duncan's Cross Country Road Trip

Duncan had been coming to All Wags since 2006, pretty much since the doors opened, and we were sad to see him have to go, but are super happy for him and his family who moved to California. Wouldn't you know that Dunc-a-lunk got to take the coolest trip across the country too to get there. His Dad didn't want Duncan to have to go in the storage area of a plane and he's a bit big to fit in the cabin, so Duncan and his Dad drove from North Carolina to Charlotte and had a great adventure. They saw many of the great sites in our country and Duncan viewed them all from a fabulous back-seat spot amongst boxes and houseplants. What a lucky boy! We'll miss you Duncan, but enjoy your great new life with your very loving Dad! I'm sure you will get plenty of opportunities to play ball in sunny California!

We had a great turn out for Bark for Life this morning and a great time! Our team raised $710! Thank you to all of you who helped us to reach that goal! We had a great time with all of the pups and enjoyed eating our Chick-fil-a biscuits and TCBY yogurt and a few pups may have gotten a few bites of some of those things too. The pups had a great time walking through uptown Charlotte and it was great seeing the people who stood out to watch the pups go by! We're so glad we could help the American Cancer Society raise money for their awesome cause!

Tyler is a Daddy!

Guess what? Tyler is a Daddy! His son, Eli Alexander Hartsell was born on April 3 at 6:22pm. He came into this world as a long little boy at 22 inches and weighing in at 7 pounds, 3 ounces. He's already started out as a tall boy like his daddy. Next time you see Tyler at All Wags, be sure to congratulate the new daddy. He has many, many sleepless nights in his future, but they are all for the best reason possible. Don't forget to congratulate grandma Karen too. We all know how much she loves grandbabies!

To find out what your community shelters need, give them a call and in the meantime, set aside these often requested items: kennels, carriers, cozy pet beds, bedding and blankets, towels and cleaning supplies such as bleach, sponges, and laundry detergent. And there's more: baby gates, digital cameras, gently used Kongs, dog toys, dog collars and leashes, and various office supplies.

Are you going to be enjoying some outdoor adventures this weekend with your pup? The week's weather has been pretty nasty but the weekend is supposed to be gorgeous! Here is a tip from Fido Dog Treats:

A Game for Sharpening Your Dog's Attention Skills

I enjoy this game so much! Whenever it's played in the classroom, it's even better. This game is a great alternative for people who are used to bringing treats up to their face to get their dogs to look at them. Here's how it works: Use people food for this game (string cheese bits, hot dogs or steak). Put a few at a time into your mouth. When your dog looks at you, spit a treat at him! Dogs who realize that food comes flying out of peoples' mouths just for looking at them tend to look at faces more! Some dogs catch the treats, brownie points for them. As your dog gets good at this game, take it outside. Put the dog on leash and simply practice in your yard if you need to. Main side note on this game: don't play at the dining table!

A guy is driving around the back woods and sees a sign in front of a broken down shanty:

"Talking Dog For Sale"

He rings the bell and the owner tells him the dog is in the backyard.

He goes out back and sees a Golden Labrador sitting there.

"You talk?" he asks.

"Yep," the Lab replies.

After the guy recovers from the shockof hearing a dog talk,he says "So, what's your story?"

The Lab looks up and says, "Well, I discovered that I could talk when I was a pup. I wanted to help the government, so I told the CIA. In no time at all they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping. I was one of their most valuable spies for eight years straight. But the jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn't getting any younger so I decided to settle down. I signed up for a job at the airport to do some undercover security, wandering near suspicious characters and listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings and was awarded a bunch of medals. I got married, had a mess of puppies, and now I'm just retired."

The guy is amazed. He goes back in and asks the owner what he wants for the dog.

"Ten dollars," the guy says.

"Ten dollars? This dog is amazing! Why on earth are you selling him so cheap?"

"Because he's a liar. He never did any of that stuff!"

This is Camden and her owner can't keep her, can you help? She is 6 years old and has lived with her owner since she was a puppy, but she does not like small children and her owner has lots of young nieces and nephews so she can't keep her. She is a very sweet dog who has been coming to All Wags for forever, she just gets a little afraid around small children, so she would need a new forever home where there aren't any. She loves older children, so a home with teenagers would be great. We are really hoping that we can help her find a home. Please help!

Proposed Budget Cuts Would Eliminate State's Animal Welfare Division within Dept of Agriculture-Please Help!

Please read on for an important message from the NC State Director of the Humane Society:

Late Tuesday afternoon the Department of Agriculture submitted their budget proposal. Within the proposal is the elimination of the Animal Welfare Division. This would leave our shelters, boarding kennels, pet stores and rescues with no oversight. Many people are sending emails and asking if they proposed “cut backs” or moving the department elsewhere. The proposal is to eliminate the Animal Welfare Division completely.

The Appropriations Committee (both House and Senate) is responsible for creating the final budget. The subcommittees considering this proposal in both chambers are Natural and Economic Resources. They are the groups that we need to contact. They will consider the proposal, put together a budget and present in a few weeks. It is critical that they hear from us. If we do not act it is possible that the Animal Welfare Division will be cut. This would be devastating to NC and our animals.

Food, Drinks and helping Hounds4Heroes!

The bar and restaurant The Wooden Vine located at 231 North Tryon, right across the street from B of A, is giving Hounds4Heroes a donation based upon the business they get into their establishment this weekend, March 4^th through the 6^th. The people who own the place are good people, and want to give something back to the community. They have chosen Hounds4Heroes because they are dog lovers and support our troops.

Many military veterans suffer emotional ailments as a result of their service. From post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury to anxiety, flashbacks and stress, the invisible wounds on our service members are deep.

Hounds4Heroes (H4H) is a non-profit organization that seeks to alleviate the psychological suffering of our Nation's heroes by providing companion animals free of charge. They strive to match our veterans with animals from local shelters and foster homes that might otherwise face euthanasia without permanent forever homes. Founded in 2010 in Charlotte, H4H facilitates the adoption of homeless animals with veterans from all branches of service. They provide a companion animal, trained in basic commands free of charge as our way of saying, “Thank you for your service.”

Their founder will be there Friday for happy hour at 430pm to kick off this event. They have completed 26 adoptions in the last year and have their 27^th scheduled for this weekend. Funds are urgently needed to keep their programs going.
